Understanding Homophobia-Heterosexism and How to Be an Ally 

Grades 6-8; and 9-12  

The lesson plan aims to educate students about heterosexism and empathy regarding the ways in which this form of discrimination becomes evident in both school and society at large.  As a result of the lesson, students become empowered to become effective allies in promoting inclusivity and equity for individuals who identify as members of the LGBTQIA+ community.

  • The ADL lesson plan “Understanding Homophobia and How to Be an Ally” explores different forms of homophobia and heterosexism, including individual, cultural, and institutional heterosexist biases. How do you plan to use this lesson as a tool to support students’ awareness and empathy for individuals who identify as members of the LGBTQIA+ community within your classroom or school community? 
  • The ADL lesson plan not only defines homophobia/heterosexism, but it also incorporates strategies for combating it, through education, advocacy, and creating inclusive spaces in the classrooms and school communities. Reflect on the lesson plan in its entirety. Which strategies or concepts presented resonated with you the most? How will you apply these strategies and concepts with students in your own classroom?  How will this help to broaden their understanding of heterosexism in ways that will challenge observable stereotypes within the school community and beyond?
